The Golf Course
The golf course at Margate Country Club is an 18-hole, par 71 course designed by Peter Matkovich. The course is open 7 days a week and only closes on Christmas Day. It is set on high ground and decorated throughout with palm trees, wild strelitzia and other indigenous vegetation. The natural beauty of the course and surrounds is enhanced by the many wonderful water features dotted around the course as well as some lovely inland views. It is a delightful course to play and carefully laid out to cater to golfers of all standards, ensuring a memorable experience regardless of your golfing expertise. The five par-3's are picturesque and highly regarded. Also see The Course for detailed information.
Bird and Wild Life
The water features on the golf course have become a big attraction to local and visiting bird life, giving players a pleasant distraction between golf shots. Depending on the season, sightings include nesting crowned cranes, spurwing geese, sacred ibis and African spoonbills. Various kingfishers, African harrier-hawks (gymnogene), sparrow-hawks are also common sightings as are the hamerkop and hornbills. The beautiful African Jacana is the Clubs' logo and they enjoy hanging out at the dams at the 2nd hole.
You may also be lucky to spot the terrapins at the dams at the 2nd hole. Water monitors are a common sighting at the various water features on the golf course. At times we also have impala visiting the course from the River Valley Nature Reserve situated to the right of the 12th and 13th holes. Unfortunately, not racking the bunkers behind them. You may even get to spot Nyala in the reserve.
Remember to make a stop at our lovely "Halfway House", serving freshly prepared meals and snacks. Our fish and chips have earned an extremely good reputation on the coast!
The Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach / Margate Challenge
The highlight on Margate Country Club's golfing calender is the annual Margate Challenge. This is a very popular multi-day competition and proudly sponsored by Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach. There is a brand-new Toyota up for grabs on the final day of the event. To date it has never been won, so come and try your luck and be the first hole-in-one on the 16th. It is a very enjoyable and popular event for both members and visitors. See the Events Noticeboard page for more information.
Visitors are always welcome at Margate Country Club and you would not go wrong arranging a game with some of the members. The Pro Shop will gladly assist you with this. Visitors can also be reminded that our 19th Hole is surely the friendliest 19th Hole on the coast.
Don't forget that "Golf and Friendliness is our game"
