Snooker
The formation of the UGU District Snooker Association has given snooker in southern KwaZulu Natal a huge boost. Margate Country Club is now an affiliated snooker league venue for a sport that is quickly growing in popularity.
Thanks to the vision and efforts of KwaZulu Natal Snooker League player Selvin Moodley, Margate Country Club undertook alterations of the main building in order to facilitate a second table as well as seating for spectators. Both tables have been totally refurbished and are the same standard as the match play tables at Qmasters Centre Durban. Also very exciting is that Qmasters are in the process of starting a Pro-circuit for Snooker in South Africa.
The good news for the South Coast of KZN is that the South African Cue Sports Federation, together with the South African Snooker and Billiards Association, have decided that this area can affiliate directly to them as a district.
The league has weekly fixtures with a mixture of experienced and inexperienced snooker players of all ages. In addition to this the players also partake in a Doubles and Singles Club Championship.
The 2019 KZN South Snooker Season
The 2019 South Coast Snooker season was a huge success. On 13 December 2019 Selvin Moodley became the first ever KZN South Coast Singles Snooker Champion and number 1 league player. Together with his doubles playing partner Flip Fourie they won the 2019 Doubles Championship.
At the awards evening held at Margate Country Club, Damon Schloms received the award for the most improved young player. Most dedicated player award went to Collin Chetty. Siyanda Nkonyeni unanimously won the player of the year award as he featured well in the league and the knockout tournaments.
Selvin Moodley (also a two-times KwaZulu-Natal champion and Durban and Districts winner) together with other senior players, are willing to offer their expertise and knowledge of the game to youngsters by coaching them. Youth league and coaching clinics are held on Saturdays at Margate Country Club from 09h00 to 13h00.
The new UGU District Snooker Association league season will commence on 17 February 2020. For further information regarding the youth league or joining the league for the new season contact Selvin Moodley on 083 272 1757. Enquiries can also be made through the office.
